University of Oxford managers graduate from Activate Business School’s trailblazing leadership programme

The second cohort of Activate Business School’s Determined to Lead Oxford programme graduated at a special ceremony held at City of Oxford College and University Centre on Thursday 11 June.

The cohort, who began the programme in October 2025, included 19 managerial delegates from the University of Oxford who each received a certificate of completion at the graduation.

Determined to Lead Oxford is a Leadership and Management programme delivered by Activate Business School at City of Oxford College in dedicated facilities.

This transformative programme was developed to enable middle-level managers to grow their knowledge, techniques and management skills, while working €“ an approach that enables students to apply what they learn to their roles in real time.

The bespoke nine-month programme was launched using Insights, a psychometric tool designed to help people understand themselves and others in order to make the most of their relationships in the workplace.

The programme was developed using Activate Learning’s award-winningLearning Philosophy, a neuroscience-based approach to teaching and learning that places the student at the centre of their educational experience.

Jayne Atkinson, Head of Sales at Activate Business School, said: “It’s great to be here this evening to celebrate the success of the Determined to Lead programme with all of the delegates.

“It’s so nice to see them all today and see how far they’ve come since starting the course. They’ve achieved amazing things, all of which will be highly valuable for them in both their business life and also their personal life.”

Hannah Snell, Senior Outreach Officer at Saint Anne’s College, University of Oxford, said:

“The mentoring aspect of the course has been really helpful in learning more about how I can apply myself to certain processes, but also the insights, profiles and reflecting on myself as a leader has been really valuable, especially as it reinforces the idea that there’s not one type of person.

“There’s not one type of leader, but you can take the skills that you’ve got and build on those.

“The event today has been really fun. It’s been a nice celebration of the commitment that everyone has been put in. Not just the people who’ve attended the programme, but the people who’ve developed it and the people who’ve been there at every session.”

What happens next? Most people stay on with the employer they train with, but there are plenty of options! You may decide to study a higher-level apprenticeship, return to academic studies, or work full time. We will support you whatever you decide!

The apprenticeship programme

You will have access to a range of support and advice we have on offer. This includes support from Advice and Admissions, Learning Support and Student Support.

You can access all facilities at Activate Learning Colleges and reap benefits, such as student discount. However, you may not be entitled to certain funding and travel bursaries as apprenticeships are paid positions.

How much will I earn?

The amount you’ll earn will vary depending on the nature of your role, sector and business you are working with.

The minimum hourly rate for an apprentice is £8.00, however most apprentices are paid more than this. If you are over 19 and have completed one year, you will be paid national minimum wage.

You will also be entitled to the same conditions as all other employees in a business, including paid holiday, sick pay and pensions (where requirements are met).

What can I expect from my apprenticeship?

You must be at least 16 years old when you start an apprenticeship.

There are 3 types of apprenticeships depending on your requirements and previous qualifications: day release, work-based and block-release.

Your apprenticeship programme may be assessed with:

  • Practical assessments/exams
  • A portfolio of evidence
  • Interviews and presentations
  • Final assessments
  • On and off the job training

You will have a performance coach visit your workplace every eight weeks as well as an inhouse mentor throughout your apprenticeship.

An apprenticeship typically lasts 24 months, but can vary between 12 months to 5 years.
