Seeking specific skills? Bespoke training can offer a genuine solution

BBC research published this week reveals a stark picture of where young people’s ambitions are heading.

The popularity of degree apprenticeships – which offer a paid-for university degree along with a salary – has grown as the cost of university has come under increased scrutiny.

Applicants through the government’s central platform have nearly tripled from 8,100 to 21,800 in three years, while available positions have fallen from 7,300 to just 3,700.

Young people are sending a clear message. They want to earn while they learn, gain real experience, and avoid starting their working lives with significant debt. But the supply chain isn’t keeping pace.

This is where employer action matters, and where bespoke training alongside apprenticeships creates a genuine solution.

Complementary pathways

At Activate Business School, we offer two complementary pathways:

Levy-funded apprenticeships:

• Business Administration (Level 3)
• Emerging Business Leadership (L3)
• ICT (L3)
• Customer Service Specialist (L3)
• Data Analyst (L4)
• Marketing Executive (L4)
• AI and Automation Practitioner (L4)
• Automation Leadership (L4)

Bespoke employer training tailored to your organisation’s specific needs – flexible, targeted, and designed around your team rather than a standard framework.

• Determined to Lead
• Insights
• AI
• Data Analytics

Because not every development need fits a standard apprenticeship.

Sometimes you need AI governance training for a specific team. Sometimes a marketing cohort needs upskilling in a particular platform. Sometimes your administration team needs a programme built around your own processes and culture.

That’s what bespoke training delivers.

And with government funding of up to £18,000 available for eligible apprenticeship programmes, the financial case for investing in your people has never been stronger.

The demand from young talent is there. The question is whether your organisation is ready to meet it.

Progression routes

What happens next? Most people stay on with the employer they train with, but there are plenty of options! You may decide to study a higher-level apprenticeship, return to academic studies, or work full time. We will support you whatever you decide!

The apprenticeship programme

You will have access to a range of support and advice we have on offer. This includes support from Advice and Admissions, Learning Support and Student Support.

You can access all facilities at Activate Learning Colleges and reap benefits, such as student discount. However, you may not be entitled to certain funding and travel bursaries as apprenticeships are paid positions.

How much will I earn?

The amount you’ll earn will vary depending on the nature of your role, sector and business you are working with.

The minimum hourly rate for an apprentice is £8.00, however most apprentices are paid more than this. If you are over 19 and have completed one year, you will be paid national minimum wage.

You will also be entitled to the same conditions as all other employees in a business, including paid holiday, sick pay and pensions (where requirements are met).

What can I expect from my apprenticeship?

You must be at least 16 years old when you start an apprenticeship.

There are 3 types of apprenticeships depending on your requirements and previous qualifications: day release, work-based and block-release.

Your apprenticeship programme may be assessed with:

  • Practical assessments/exams
  • A portfolio of evidence
  • Interviews and presentations
  • Final assessments
  • On and off the job training

You will have a performance coach visit your workplace every eight weeks as well as an inhouse mentor throughout your apprenticeship.

An apprenticeship typically lasts 24 months, but can vary between 12 months to 5 years.
