Maximising ROI on Apprenticeship Programmes

Apprenticeships have emerged as a powerful tool for bridging the skills gap and nurturing a highly skilled workforce. With their combination of practical experience and structured training, apprenticeships offer a unique avenue for individuals to embark on successful careers while providing businesses with a pipeline of talented professionals.

As an apprenticeship provider, Activate Apprenticeships has witnessed first-hand the transformative impact of well-designed apprenticeship programmes. In this thought piece, we delve into the best practices for designing and implementing effective apprenticeship programmes, while highlighting the key metrics to measure their impact and maximise return on investment (ROI).

Designing Effective Apprenticeship Programmes: The Blueprint for Success

To ensure the success of apprenticeship programmes, it is essential to approach their design with careful consideration. Here are some key factors to keep in mind:

Identifying Skills in Demand: Conduct thorough market research to identify the skills in high demand within your industry. This ensures that the apprenticeship programme you are trying to deliver aligns with industry needs and enhances employability for participants.

According to a report by the British Chamber of Commerce, the top skills in demand in the manufacturing sector are advanced manufacturing, robotics, and data analysis. In the healthcare sector, skills such as medical coding, patient care, and medical technology are in high demand. By aligning apprenticeship programmes with these identified skills, businesses can meet industry needs and provide valuable opportunities for participants to secure employment.

Structured Learning and Practical Experience: Strike a balance between theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Apprentices should have opportunities to apply their learning in real-world scenarios, working alongside experienced professionals.

A study conducted by the Department for Education found that apprenticeships with a strong emphasis on practical, on-the-job training have higher completion rates and lead to better employment outcomes. By providing hands-on experience and integrating it with classroom instruction, apprentices can develop the skills and knowledge necessary for success in their chosen field.

Clear Pathways and Progression Opportunities: Provide a clear pathway for apprentices to progress in their careers. This can include opportunities for further education, upskilling, or promotion within the organisation.

Research from the National Apprenticeship Service shows that apprentices who have clear progression pathways are more likely to stay engaged and complete their programmes. Offering apprentices the chance to pursue higher-level qualifications or advance within the company encourages their professional growth and increases their commitment to the programme.

Measuring Impact: The Metrics that Matter

Measuring the impact of apprenticeship programmes is crucial for evaluating their effectiveness and optimising ROI. Here are some key metrics to consider:

Completion Rates: Monitor the percentage of apprentices who successfully complete the programme. This metric provides insights into programme engagement, satisfaction, and overall effectiveness.

According to data from the Department for Education, apprenticeship completion rates have steadily increased over the past five years, reaching an average of 76% across all sectors. By tracking completion rates, organisations can identify any areas of the programme that may need improvement and make adjustments to enhance participant satisfaction and success.

Retention, Mobility and Progression: Track the number of apprentices who remain with the organisation or progress to higher-level roles. This metric reflects the programme’s ability to retain and develop talent.

A survey conducted by the Federation of Small Businesses found that 82% of apprentices stay with their employer after completing their apprenticeship. Additionally, 64% of apprentices are offered permanent positions within their organisation. These retention and progression rates demonstrate the value of apprenticeships in nurturing talent and building a skilled workforce.

Employer Satisfaction: Gather feedback from employers to assess their satisfaction with apprentices’ performance and the programme’s impact on their business. This metric gauges the programme’s ability to meet industry needs.

By consistently collecting feedback from employers, apprenticeship providers can ensure that their programmes meet industry standards and address employer expectations.

Wage Progression: Evaluate the extent to which apprentices’ wages increase over time, indicating the programme’s impact on their earning potential.

Research conducted by the UK Government found that completing an apprenticeship leads to an average wage increase of 15%. This wage progression showcases the long-term benefits of apprenticeships, both for individuals and businesses. By monitoring wage progression, organisations can assess the financial impact of their apprenticeship programmes and the return on investment for both apprentices and employers.

Enhancing Programme Effectiveness: Tips for Success

To maximise the ROI of apprenticeship programmes, consider the following strategies:

Ongoing Support and Mentoring: Provide apprentices with dedicated mentors who can guide and support their learning journey. Regular check-ins and feedback sessions foster growth and address any challenges.

Activate Apprenticeships ensures ongoing support for apprentices by assigning them dedicated mentors who provide guidance throughout their apprenticeship journey. These mentors conduct regular check-ins, provide constructive feedback, and offer support when apprentices face difficulties. This personalised approach helps apprentices stay motivated and overcome obstacles.

Collaborative Industry Partnerships: Forge strong partnerships with industry organisations and stakeholders to ensure that the programme remains relevant and aligned with industry demands.

Activate Apprenticeships actively collaborates with local Chambers of Commerce, industry associations, and employers to stay updated on industry needs and trends. This collaboration ensures that their apprenticeship programmes are designed to meet the current demands of the labour market, enhancing the employability of apprentices and the relevance of the training provided.

Continuous Evaluation and Improvement: Regularly review and evaluate the programme’s effectiveness, making adjustments as needed to enhance outcomes. Seek feedback from apprentices, employers, and educators to drive continuous improvement.

Activate Apprenticeships conducts periodic evaluations of their programmes to gather feedback from apprentices, employers, and educators. This feedback is analysed to identify areas for improvement and make necessary adjustments to the curriculum, delivery methods, or support systems. By continuously evaluating and improving the programme, apprenticeship providers can ensure the best possible outcomes for all stakeholders involved.

Apprenticeship programmes have the potential to revolutionise the workforce by nurturing skilled professionals and addressing the skills gap.

By designing effective programmes, measuring their impact, and implementing strategies for success, organisations can maximise their ROI and unlock the full potential of apprenticeships.

As the demand for a highly skilled workforce continues to grow, investing in apprenticeship programmes is not only a smart business decision but also a vital contribution to building a resilient and prosperous business and wider economy.

What happens next? Most people stay on with the employer they train with, but there are plenty of options! You may decide to study a higher-level apprenticeship, return to academic studies, or work full time. We will support you whatever you decide!

The apprenticeship programme

You will have access to a range of support and advice we have on offer. This includes support from Advice and Admissions, Learning Support and Student Support.

You can access all facilities at Activate Learning Colleges and reap benefits, such as student discount. However, you may not be entitled to certain funding and travel bursaries as apprenticeships are paid positions.

How much will I earn?

The amount you’ll earn will vary depending on the nature of your role, sector and business you are working with.

The minimum hourly rate for an apprentice is £8.00, however most apprentices are paid more than this. If you are over 19 and have completed one year, you will be paid national minimum wage.

You will also be entitled to the same conditions as all other employees in a business, including paid holiday, sick pay and pensions (where requirements are met).

What can I expect from my apprenticeship?

You must be at least 16 years old when you start an apprenticeship.

There are 3 types of apprenticeships depending on your requirements and previous qualifications: day release, work-based and block-release.

Your apprenticeship programme may be assessed with:

  • Practical assessments/exams
  • A portfolio of evidence
  • Interviews and presentations
  • Final assessments
  • On and off the job training

You will have a performance coach visit your workplace every eight weeks as well as an inhouse mentor throughout your apprenticeship.

An apprenticeship typically lasts 24 months, but can vary between 12 months to 5 years.
