Case studies – apprentices and businesses
There really has never been a better time to start an apprenticeship.
With an apprenticeship, you can ‘get in’ and go far with companies across our region and beyond. You will earn while you learn in a real job, gaining real skills – and knowledge – as well as a real future.
It is our job to work with the region’s top employers, creating fantastic apprenticeships. We want to match them with great candidates – and you with a great career.
Meet some of our most recent apprentices and read their stories:
Cain – Engineering Apprenticeship
Cain Reddick – who is currently completing an engineering apprenticeship with the guidance of Activate Apprenticeships – has not only gained the practical skills to make a genuine impact in the workplace, but has also seen his work recognised at a high-profile awards ceremony too.
Cain – an apprentice at SS Tube Technology, based in Eynsham – was ‘highly-commended’ in the Advanced Apprentice of the Year category at the Oxfordshire Apprenticeship Awards 2017, an event for young people and businesses across Oxfordshire to celebrate all things apprenticeships.
Cain’s apprenticeship focuses on developing mechanical and electrical skills, as well as a rounded-knowledge needed to start a career in production engineering.
Since beginning his apprenticeship three years’ ago, Cain has developed the skills to work as an assembly fitter and machine operator, using machinery such as lathes, milling machines and grinders.
Cain recently said of his apprenticeship: “There’s more to an apprenticeship than getting paid while you earn – you mature a lot quicker and learn life skills, without worrying about the debt you would get at university.”
Rob Allen – who is operations director at SST Technology – added: “There’s a skills gap across many industries – so let’s embrace all of these young people, train them and get them into the workplace.”
SST Technology is an international company specialising in the design and manufacture of bespoke, advanced tubular fabrications and thermal management systems.
David – Mechanical Manufacturing (Engineering) Apprenticeship
“We have had such a good experience with David that we are in the process of recruiting more apprentices. David has learnt many skills during his time with us. He is always willing to take on challenging tasks, completing them to the finest quality and challenging timescales.”
(David’s employer – Operations Manager Durk Molloy, MetaVision)
“I take a lot of pride in completing the work to the highest standard possible because it helps give the company a good reputation.”
Germain – Cookery Apprenticeship
“Germain is able to inspire others in the class by involving them in real menu selections, so they can put forward their suggestions. He has also used technology proactively, recording learning activity on his phone to create an electronic portfolio.”
(Germain’s assessor, Jules Farrand)
“I worked hard to gain promotions and to show my commitment to my employer and this paid off, as they promoted me and supported my training in my apprenticeship.”
Alice – Floristry Apprenticeship
“This has been a great way of experimenting with more unusual arrangements and taking my floristry to another level
“It’s been brilliant learning about health and safety and understanding how to do things differently. It’s also led me to progress at work.”
Jamie – Plumbing Apprenticeship
“It was very practical, varied and hands on. I learnt about heating systems, plumbing in the bathroom. I also learnt about other things such as maths, communication skills and planning. I got much better at planning my tasks and keeping customers updated.
“When I was nominated for the Freeman Award, my assessor Bob said my folder of evidence collected on site was one of the best he had seen. That was a big boost for my self-confidence.”
Madeline – Animal Care and Welfare Apprenticeship
“Since starting, I have been able to gain valuable skills and experience from working on each section of the animal unit and have gained lots of knowledge from the animal centre’s experienced staff.
“My qualification has made me even more adamant to work in the animal industry. I am considering whether to go into the animal retail industry now – and in the future, open my own pet shop – or whether to continue in the veterinary industry and start a veterinary nursing apprenticeship.”
